Notice of Race

VENUE

The 2002 Western Canadian Laser Masters Championships will be held June 22 –23, 2002 at the Wabamun Sailing Club.

 

ORGANISING AUTHORITY

The Organizing Authority is the Wabamun Sailing Club.

 

RULES

The 2002 Western Canadian Laser Masters Championships Regatta will be governed by the ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing for 2001 - 2004 (RRS) the prescriptions of the Canadian Yachting Association, this Notice of Race, the International Laser Class Rules (except as any of these are altered by this Notice of Race and the Sailing Instructions) and by the Sailing Instructions.  

ELIGIBILITY

The 2002 Western Canadian Laser Masters Championships Regatta will be raced in the Laser. The competitor must be a member of a National Sailing Association and the International Laser Class Association. The ISAF's Competitor’s Eligibility Code (RRS Appendix 2, 2001-2004) applies.  The competitor must be 35 or older by June 22, 2002.

ALTERNATIVE PENALTIES

Alternative penalties according to RRS 44.1 and 44.2 will apply.

ADVERTISING CATEGORY

The 2002 Western Canadian Laser Masters Championships Regatta shall rank as a Category C event in accordance with RRS Appendix 1 (2001 - 2004).

ENTRIES AND PAYMENT OF FEES

Entries shall be made on the attached entry form.   The fee for the 2002 Western Canadian Laser Masters Championships is $30 until June 16, 2002, $35, thereafter.  Reasonable meal packages will be available at the registration time. 

COURSE

The courses sailed will be a combination of windward leeward and equilateral triangle courses with a down wind finish.

 

REGISTRATION

Competitors shall register at the Wabamun Sailing Club Friday June 21 19:00 - 20:30 or Saturday June 22 08:00 – 10:00.

 

SCORING

The low point scoring system of RRS Appendix A (2001 - 2004) adjusted with the ILCA masters age credit system will be used.  Seven races are scheduled of which one race must be completed to constitute a series for the Championship.

AWARDS

Trophies will be awarded based on the following numbers of yachts per division:

2-5 yachts

1st place

6-9 yachts

1st & 2nd places

10 or more yachts

1st, 2nd & 3rd places

The Sailing Instructions will be available upon completion of registration at the Wabamun Sailing Club.

The last race on Sunday, June 23 will not start later than 1400 hours. This time will be extended to accommodate any timing errors or general recalls.

ACCOMMODATION, CHARTERS AND INFORMATION

The Wabamun Sailing Club is located 60 km (40 miles) west of Edmonton on Lake Wabamun. Winds are expected to be 3-25 knots and a water temperature of 15 degrees. Edmonton is located in the heart of Alberta and is a short 3-hour drive away from the Rocky Mountains. Wabamun Sailing Club is family oriented club with plenty of room for camping or trailer parking on the club property. Full kitchen facilities and washroom facilities are also available in the Clubhouse. For the kids there is a playground, a sandy beach and plenty of room to run. Hotel accommodations are within a 15-minute drive from the club. Billeting will be available on first come, first serve basis. There might be a few charter boats available on first come, first serve basis.

RULES

Races will be governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing 2001-2004 as adopted by  US Sailing and the individual classes. Local sailing instructions will be distributed at the registration and reviewed at the skipper’s meeting.  Please study the rules for everyone’s benefits. 

 

SAFETY

Safety is the responsibility of the skipper of each yacht. ALL BOATS MUST CARRY A COAST GUARD APPROVED PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE FOR EACH PERSON ON BOARD.  Penguins and Thistles must carry a paddle and two bailers.  Additionally, Thistles must carry a Coast Guard approved type IV throw-able device, an anchor and at least 100 feet of anchor line. All boats must comply with class rules regarding required and authorized equipment.  Sail numbers must be easily identifiable.

 

MEALS

Saturday Lunch, Saturday Dinner and Sunday Lunch are all included in this year’s fees for skipper and crew.  Individual meals may be purchased for family and friends.  Water, soft drinks and beer (along with meals!) will be available.

 

OVERNIGHT STORAGE

All boats may be stored on the beach and pier area overnight.  Please note, the WYC is not responsible for damaged, lost or stolen items and/or boats.

CLASS: Lasers (age 35+)

 

RULES: The regatta will be governed by the 2001-2004 Racing Rules of Sailing, the current rules of International Laser Class Association, the Notice of Race and the sailing instructions.

 

ELIGIBILITY: Must be a current Laser Class member.  Please bring membership card.  Member  must be 35 years or older.

 

SCHEDULE: Friday- 17:00 – 19:00 registration. Saturday- 8:00 – 9:30 registration. Saturday- 11:00 Skippers meeting followed by first race at 12:00. 4 races on Saturday.

Saturday evening dinner (included in the entry fee). Sunday- 12:00 first race at 12:00, 3 races on Sunday followed by trophy presentation, no races to start after 16:00.

 

SCORING: RRS A2 low point system. Masters Grand Prix points. One discard with 5 or more races. 3 races required for Championship. Masters point system as

follows: Apprentices (35) add 3, Masters (45) add 2, Grand Masters (55) add 1, Great Grand Masters (65) add 0.

 

ENTRY FEE: Includes one dinner $50 pre-registration, late registration $70
