Feb 12-13 Florida Masters   2005 Jack Swenson Memorial Master's Championship
at the Royal Turkey Yacht Club / Palm Beach Sailing Club

Report from Halsey Bullen
Saturday conditions were gorgeous. 10 to 16 knots out of the Northwest, air and water temperature 70F greeted the 35 Laser Master  sailors.  Waves were challenging to say the least, with ocean rollers, shore reflections, and wind-raised chop coming from 3 different directions.  The starting line was in the Gulf Stream, and the shifts both oscillated and trended to the right.  Despite that trend, those who played the left side up the beach generally had the edge.

Ernesto Rodriguez showed his transom to the fleet, with Ryan Minth in close pursuit.  Veterans of this regatta were not entirely pleased to see these two first-timers speeding away from them.

Sunday was sunny and warm again, but more difficult for the RC, with light winds coming and going and big shifts, settling eventually in the southeast.  That meant starting near shore--right in front of the Kennedy compound in Palm Beach, for you nostalgia buffs--with the windward mark in the Gulf Stream.  Swenson regatta veterans smirked as the northbound current in the Stream swept several pinching neophytes into that windward mark.  The right was the way to go to windward in the one Sunday race;  Ryan left Ernesto in his wake this time, followed by Andrew Tuthill and the others who found the favored right side and stayed in the puffs.

Ernesto won the coveted Royal Turkey trophy--it's not for nothing that this regatta is nicknamed the "Dirty Old Man of the Sea Regatta"--and the green jacket that goes with it.  Ernesto also was first Apprentice Master, followed by Ryan and Andrew.  Peter Seidenberg was first great grand master and third overall, edging out first grandmaster Alden Shattuck on the handicap and tiebreak.  Dick Tillman and Newt Wattis were the second and third great grand masters, Gary Orkney and David Hartman were second and third grandmasters, and Tim Landt was first master, followed by John Hourihan and John McNally.  First woman Michelle Davis was an impressive 11th overall.  The competitors warmly applauded the combined forces of the Palm Beach Sailing Club and Royal Turkey Yacht Club, and especially Carl Schellbach, for yet another great regatta.

June 24-26, #3  Canadian Masters, Wabamun S.C., near Edmonton, Alberta

Well, one day it had to happen!  Your erstwhile NA Region Masters Coordinator managed to get his head out the boat for most of one regatta to score enough points to win.  While some will say he was lucky – making a full time job of banging the left hand corner on the first day – and managing to get to the first start on Sunday just as the starting gun went, silly mistakes also cost valuable points which almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Act 1, Friday.  This turned out to be one of those great days on water.  Four races of around 50 minutes in length were run as scheduled, with winds in the 20-25 kph zone, much reduced from the 60 kph gusts of the previous day.  Mark “slimline” Lammens  (down to 210lbs from 240!) started to look invincible with three bullets in the first three races, but an 8th in the last race combined with his apprentice category could only put him into third place overnight.  Other contenders showing form were master Barry “black-eyed” Tee, ex-New Zealand Masters champion with a 3, 3 ,2, 5 and GM John D-E slowly improved with a 6, 5, 3, 1 to take the overnight handicap lead.  Previous Canadian Masters winner Ken Brown has a mixed day with a 7, 10, 2, 6.   Leading the 5 (yes 5!) GGMs was Mike Eichwald  with 13, 8, 12, 3 from Jim Christopher’s 11, 9, 5, 19.  Jim used a radial sail for the first two races then switched to a full rig after lunch.

Act 2, Saturday.  The fleet waited for a couple of hours for the wind to build, but with forecasts of thunderstorms later in the afternoon, it did not look too promising to get four races in.  The lighter shiftier winds upset the front runners somewhat, with only Jim Christopher, Mike Eichwald, and Ken Brown scoring single digits for the two races sailed.   GM Doug Bell did a horizon job on the first race by putting short port hitch from the committee boat before getting some wind and pressure all of his own and embarrassed the rest of the fleet.  The second race was won by GM John D-E from Saskatoon’s Ben Pickford, the two of them sailing away from the rest of the fleet.    Thunder clouds and occasional lightning brought sailing to halt after the two races so overnight it was still John D-E from Barry Tee.

Act 3, Sunday.   Light winds from the north, moving slightly east during the day caught some of the fleet out with the 9:30 am start at the far side of the lake.  John D-E just made the pin end with some pressure of his own, went left and only apprentice Lewis Oteruelo provided some brief competition before his gooseneck fitting shattered.   Barry Tee was not done yet, however and threw in a 2 and 1 in the last two races compared with John D-E’s 6 and 8.  While Barry won the regatta on the water, his lead was not enough to overcome the one point per race handicap with John D-E winning by two points.  Hot old guy for the day was Jim Christopher who pulled up to a handicap third place with a 7, 2, 1 to take the GGM lead.

Report by Doug Bell, who also happened to win the event.  Doug is a Calgary doctor and GM who deserves credit for travelling all the way from Calgary to Vancouver (975 km or 609 miles) to float around English Bay in such testing conditions.   Your masters coordinator would have liked to have gone in an attempt to put Doug in his place, but too much work and Fortelaza was beckoning.  Looks like Jasek was playing shit or bust.

PCC was held at the great Jericho Sailing facility on English Bay in Vancouver on Sept 17-18 in light air from various directions. Yours truly, D5 prairie sailor from Calgary YC in first race ever in English Bay, managed to grab a bullet by playing the shifts which had a higher frequency than was described by locals. With the wind direction of the day, tides did not seem to be as important getting in phase with the shifts and looking for the drafts coming out of the city.
An expected sea breeze never really materialised so the next races were in similar conditions with a bullet from Ken Brown (M) and pairs of bullets from local Jacek Suski and Seattle's Dan Falk and the last race in a veering wind for reaching on all legs.
Local Peter Graham (GGM) showed excellent speed and consistency ending up tied for second in the regatta with Ken Brown from Victoria. Five finishes in the top 6 gave Doug Bell (GM) the regatta's Don Trask Perpetual Trophy once the master scoring was applied to Ken Brown's (M) top raw score.
District 6 Secretary Andy Hunt's great organisation of steak & shrimp dinner, and on water committee as well as draw prizes kindly donated by West Marine, who provided key chains and frisbees and Rekord Marine who provided a Ronstan fleece jacket and some Ronstan sailing gloves were appreciated.

Sep 17-18 #9 New England Masters

New England Masters Championship Report (by Peter Seidenberg)
Forty-eight hardy sailors showed up on Third Beach in Newport on Saturday morning despite the threat of Ophelia. The forecast hadn’t been good for Friday night and
Saturday morning, yet they came from all over New England plus New Jersey, New York and Toronto. Contrary to the forecast, Friday night had been quiet, so was Saturday early morning. By 9 a.m., however, the predicted strong Northerly started to come through, touching 20 mph and blowing the tops off the huge and fast-moving swells coming up the bay from the Atlantic. It was an eerie sight, yet most sailors were ready to go and sail in these most unusual conditions before the predicted easing of the wind would slow things down. This expected softening was probably the reason why only the two participating females chose to sail with their Radial rig. After a half-hour postponement, racing started in NW 18 on a twice-around windward-leeward course. The upwind swells created an unusual stop-n’-go type of sailing that required a lot of steering and playing with the mainsheet. Local heavy-air ace Andy Pimental did it best and won the race ahead of local all-round ace Scott Ferguson setting the stage for a dual throughout the regatta. The second race, on an Olympic course, saw already an easing of the wind to 15 mph. Two more twice-around windward-leeward races were sailed that day in a further softening and veering wind. By the end of the fourth race the wind was down to N 6, and the sun was out. Who would have thought this to happen with Ophelia at our door step, albeit fleeing fast.

With Ophelia being history, the second day presented itself with blue skies and brilliant sunshine. As is typical on the Sakonnett River (really a Bay of the Atlantic),under these conditions the NW 8 breeze was expected to make way for a SW breeze. This became apparent at the end of the once-around wwd-lwd first race of the day when the wind started to die fast and become “squirly”. After waiting for an hour for the SW to come in, the race committee made the wise decision to meet the wind “half way” and move the course down the bay further toward the Atlantic. Races two and three were sailed in a strengthening SW 10-15, the former on a twice-around wwd-lwd course, and the latter on an Olympic course bringing the regatta to a crowning end. Apprentice Scott Ferguson sailed a very consistent series and won ahead of Master  Andy Pimental by a corrected 7- point lead, proving ones again that an Apprentice can overcome the handicap hurdle. Local Apprentice David Moffet finished a distant third. Everybody sailed Standard that day.
