Saturday conditions were gorgeous. 10 to 16 knots out of the Northwest, air and water temperature 70F greeted the 35 Laser Master  sailors.  Waves were challenging to say the least, with ocean rollers, shore reflections, and wind-raised chop coming from 3 different directions.  The starting line was in the Gulf Stream, and the shifts both oscillated and trended to the right.  Despite that trend, those who played the left side up the beach generally had the edge.
 
Ernesto Rodriguez showed his transom to the fleet, with Ryan Minth in close pursuit.  Veterans of this regatta were not entirely pleased to see these two first-timers speeding away from them.
 
Sunday was sunny and warm again, but more difficult for the RC, with light winds coming and going and big shifts, settling eventually in the southeast.  That meant starting near shore--right in front of the Kennedy compound in Palm Beach, for you nostalgia buffs--with the windward mark in the Gulf Stream.  Swenson regatta veterans smirked as the northbound current in the Stream swept several pinching neophytes into that windward mark.  The right was the way to go to windward in the one Sunday race;  Ryan left Ernesto in his wake this time, followed by Andrew Tuthill and the others who found the favored right side and stayed in the puffs.
 
Ernesto won the coveted Royal Turkey trophy--it's not for nothing that this regatta is nicknamed the "Dirty Old Man of the Sea Regatta"--and the green jacket that goes with it.  Ernesto also was first Apprentice Master, followed by Ryan and Andrew.  Peter Seidenberg was first great grand master and third overall, edging out first grandmaster Alden Shattuck on the handicap and tiebreak.  Dick Tillman and Newt Wattis were the second and third great grand masters, Gary Orkney and David Hartman were second and third grandmasters, and Tim Landt was first master, followed by John Hourihan and John McNally.  First woman Michelle Davis was an impressive 11th overall.  The competitors warmly applauded the combined forces of the Palm Beach Sailing Club and Royal Turkey Yacht Club, and especially Carl Schellbach, for yet another great regatta.
